FORGIVENESS:

The Hebrew and the Greek have several words [with different meanings] that are all translated into one word in English.

Another precious coincidence just happened.

A dear Christian friend in West Virginia (we used to call them pen-pals), David Strock, sent me the attached recorded message from David du Plessis. My friend and I are both old enough to remember this famous prophet who fanned the fire of the Holy Spirit in England 60-70 years ago. David Strock was lucky enough to meet Mr. Du Plessis when the latter would visit his dad and stay briefly. Well, I received the attached recording, and finished listening to it yesterday. Several statements by Du Plessis about forgiveness really stood out. Like, Jesus didn't ask us to condemn, neither did he ask us to justify, a brother's lack of understanding, but just to forgive them. And such was Du Plessis' attitude when he went to the Church of England.


By coincidence, at last night's Bible Study, David Hawking was expounding on the word "forgive" which came up in the 9th chapter of Matthew when Jesus healed the paralyzed man, first asking, "Which is easier to say, your sins are forgiven, or to say get up and walk?" Jesus chose to say, "Get up and walk" instead of "Your sins are forgiven". Yet the Pharisees were horrified that Jesus assumed the right to do what only God could do, and that was forgive sins. David Hawking explained that in the Greek language of the day used by the disciples there are many different words for "forgive". Each variation of the word has a different meaning. In English we have only one word for them all, so it limits our understanding.


It becomes clearer to me now how we can forgive or make allowances for other people without judging them. Instead of separating ourselves from them, we can separate their sins from them, by imparting grace and love.


The point is made by Matthew 9:9-12 when Jesus was having dinner at the house of Matthew the tax-collector and many tax collectors and sinners came and joined them. The Pharisees were thinking of scriptures which told the faithful to "come out of them", to "separate yourselves" from pagans. The Pharisees failed to see that it was the sinners who were separating themselves from sin as they drew closer to Jesus. Jesus wasn't leaving the light to join the darkness; the tax collectors and sinners were leaving the darkness because Jesus was the Light.


David du Plessis makes the same point by describing how he brought the light into the Church of England literally, standing in their pulpits preaching, while his Pentecostal critics accused him of accepting the darkness. Impossible. The darkness cannot put out the light.
