In five weeks, the prospect of peace in Ukraine has grown closer than at any point in recent years
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump will hold their second direct phone conversation in as many months on Tuesday. The conversation could possibl lead to a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict.
Their calls scheduled for 1300 GMT, comes after weeks of intense diplomatic engagement between Moscow and Washington, as well as Kiev and its US and European backers. Here’s an overview of key developments since Putin and Trump last spoke on February 12.
Pivot towards normalcy
Upon beginning his second presidential term in January, Trump departed from the policy of his predecessor, Joe Biden, who sought the diplomatic “isolation” of Russia in response to its involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
Trump administration officials argue that mature statesmanship involves dialogue with both allies and adversaries, pointing to historic US-Soviet interactions during the Cold War.
Reviving diplomacy
On February 18, senior diplomats from Russia and the US met in Saudi Arabia to address the breakdown in communications. They agreed to normalize the operations of their diplomatic missions, which had previously been hindered by mutual restrictions.
A follow-up meeting in Türkiye a week later led to tangible progress, as the US accepted Aleksandr Darchiev as Russia’s new ambassador to Washington. Darchiev, previously head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s North America Department, represented Moscow during the talks in Istanbul.
Pressure on Ukraine
Central to Trump's diplomatic reset with Russia has been his refusal to continue Biden’s commitment of indefinite support for Kiev. The new US administration now emphasizes that Ukraine must be willing to compromise to end the conflict.
Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky initially resisted this shift. During a tense meeting at the White House on February 28, he openly challenged Trump’s approach to mediation, prompting the Ukrainian delegation’s abrupt departure and a temporary suspension of US aid and intelligence sharing.
Kiev has since moderated several key demands, notably dropping its insistence on Western security guarantees as a prerequisite to negotiations. After bilateral discussions in Jeddah last week, Zelensky publicly endorsed an unconditional 30-day ceasefire.
Kursk defeat
Ukraine's negotiating position has been further weakened by battlefield setbacks in Russia’s Kursk Region, where Moscow’s forces have largely expelled Ukrainian troops following an incursion in August 2024. The offensive, which has cost Kiev over 68,000 troops killed, wounded or taken prisoner, was aimed at gaining leverage for peace negotiations by seizing internationally recognized Russian territory.
However, following Russia’s recent liberation of the town of Sudzha – once pivotal for Ukrainian military operations – Kiev declared its objectives in the incursion “achieved.” The Ukrainian military maintains its forces withdrew from the area in an orderly way and denies Russian and American assertions of near encirclement.
Temporary ceasefire
Putin has expressed support for Trump’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire but emphasized that Moscow will not permit Kiev to exploit the pause for military regrouping or reinforcement. Russia insists any suspension of hostilities must include freezing arms deliveries and halting forced conscription in Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials, alongside several Western European leaders, have alleged Putin opposes a ceasefire, urging Trump to retaliate by increasing military aid and sanctions against Russia.
Some media reports criticized Moscow for allegedly disrespecting Trump by making his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, “wait eight hours” for a meeting with Putin – a claim the US president has dismissed as “fake news.”

A report by SecondStreet.org, using Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, found that at least 15,474 Canadians died while waiting for surgeries or diagnostic procedures during the 2023-2024 fiscal year. This figure is incomplete, as it excludes data from Quebec, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, and most of Manitoba.
When extrapolating for missing data, SecondStreet.org estimated that the total could be as high as 28,077 deaths.
As in, almost 30k Canadians DIED while waiting for proper Healthcare [almost one in every thousand]…this caused by a reliance on Emergency Rooms, another strain because approximately 6.5 Million Canadians do not have access to a family doctor or nurse practitioner, according to a survey conducted between 2022-2023, by OurCare.
Insight: What 2024 tells us about the state of health care in Canada
The health care crisis is not over, but there was good news this year. Here’s what 2024 revealed about momentum for change — and ongoing challenges.
1. Patients are still struggling to access care when they need it.
We’ve all heard the statistic: more than 6.5 million Canadians don’t have a regular care provider. As reported by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the number of family doctors has dropped for the first time in decades. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Federal, provincial and territorial governments are collaborating on solutions, including team-based care models and incentives for doctors to work in rural areas.
2. If we want to help doctors focus on patients instead of paperwork, it’s time to call in the robots.
Doctors continue to report an excessive amount of time on unnecessary administrative tasks — time that could be spent on patient visits. In 2024, the CMA pushed for the elimination of sick notes across Canada and supported better connectivity between medical records systems, which doctors use every day to share important information about patients with other health providers. This year also saw a surge in the use of AI in health care, as well as discussions about what that will mean for the future.
3. Climate change has created a new reality in health care, and we’re not ready for it.
Wildfires, flooding and other extreme climate events are the new norm. We need to prepare for the health threats that come with it — and protect our health care system from climate shocks. Part of that work includes advocating for planetary health at an international level. This year, the CMA participated in COP16 and COP29 to highlight the critical link between climate and human health, and continued our annual contribution to The Lancet’s recommendations for Canada.
4. Reconciliation in health care is a shared responsibility.
The legacy of colonialism and systemic racism continues to impact the health of Indigenous Peoples. In September, the CMA apologized for its role, and the role of the medical profession, in past and ongoing harms to First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in the health system. The apology paved the way for the CMA’s ReconciliACTION plan, which outlines how we will advance Indigenous health and wellbeing, inspire the medical profession’s journey to truth and reconciliation, and advance internal reconciliation at the CMA.
5. Health care is a team sport. Recruiting providers in siloes isn’t working.
The ability to find a doctor depends on where you live — and that needs to change. One way to tackle excessive wait times and widespread family physician shortages is to improve physician mobility, allowing doctors to practise in multiple jurisdictions when needed. The CMA continues to call on governments to implement pan-Canadian licensure. Last year’s launch of the Atlantic Physician Registry showed what’s possible.
6. Physician burnout is a health systems issue — it won’t change unless we change the system.
The 2024 International Conference on Physician Health in Halifax sold out in days, drawing physicians and researchers from 11 countries. That’s an indication of how the culture of medicine is changing to support physician wellness. To keep track of both progress and areas for improvement in the profession, the CMA will launch the next national survey of physician health in 2025 — and is working towards greater physical, psychological and cultural safety in all health settings.
7. Health misinformation is getting worse. We need to fight back.
It’s tough to know what’s true and what’s not when you’re wading through the flood of online health information. This year, the CMA launched Healthcare for Real to provide easy-to-understand answers to questions about Canada’s health system.
8. Governments are investing in health care. Now we need to hold them accountable for change.
With a federal election looming in 2025, tracking how health care funding is spent is more important than ever. Earlier this year, the CMA called for the creation of a Chief Health Accountability Officer to track progress on health reform nationwide and report on the efficiency of health care spending. Implementing better accountability measures is the best way to ensure transparency and meet critical health care targets.

President Donald Trump on Monday declared that all pardons issued by his predecessor Joe Biden were "void" and "vacant," alleging that they had been executed without Biden's direct approval. Trump claimed the pardons were signed using an autopen—a device that replicates a person’s signature—implying that Biden neither personally signed them nor was aware of their issuance. He further suggested that individuals who facilitated these actions without Biden's consent may have committed a crime.

Who Had Biden Pardoned?
In his final hours in office, Biden had issued a series of preemptive pardons to multiple individuals, including his own family members—brothers James and Francis Biden, sister Valerie Biden Owens, and their spouses.
