Rebel News: Other Right-Wing Media Dominate Press Conferences after French debate...

OTTAWA — Rebel News and other right-wing media outlets dominated the question-and-answer sessions with federal party leaders after Wednesday's French-language leaders’ debate — though not all of them got answers to their questions.

Liberal Leader Mark Carney was the first leader to take 10 minutes of questions from the media after the debate, which took place at CBC/Radio-Canada in Montreal.

Members of the media lined up in two lines, one for English questions and one for French questions. Right-wing media outlets stacked the long lines and managed to get in questions to each of the leaders.

Carney received a question from a Juno News reporter who said his campaign is based on putting the Liberal leader in front and "hiding" people that were close to former prime minister Justin Trudeau. In his reply, Carney called the question "rather odd" but said his team includes both new and experienced candidates.

Carney also received a question from a representative from True North, a conservative media outlet. The reporter asked him how many genders there are, to which he responded that "in terms of sex, there are two." The reporter then asked if Carney believed that biological women have the right to their own spaces. Carney said that "as a general objective, yes,' and that his government values all Canadians.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who was next to speak with reporters, refused to answer questions from Rebel News representatives and said the organization spreads disinformation.

When a second reporter from the same organization came to the mic, he said "You know where I'm gonna go with this though, right?" before repeating that he wouldn't answer questions.

Rebel News posted on its website Wednesday that it had mounted legal pressure on the Leaders' Debates Commission to have greater access in order to get more questions to the leaders.

Poilievre, who was next, did take questions from Rebel News.

He said his party is the only one willing to protect the freedom of the press, that he stands for free speech and respects the right of Canadians to have access to the media they choose.

Poilievre's availability to media during the election campaign has come under scrutiny. Reporters have been able to ask few questions, with members of his team choosing who can ask them.

Answering a question from Rebel News about pipelines, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet said it seemed like the reporter already had the answer he wanted to write in his question. He also said Canada needs to reduce its consumption of oil because people are destroying the planet.

The Rebel News representative asked him a second question on the topic, saying that his stance went against a poll that suggested Quebecers support the building of new pipelines. Blanchet, smiling, said "Don't you know my love for commenting polls? Have a nice evening."

The Green Party, which was disinvited from the debates, posted on social media saying something "doesn't add up" about the large number of questions from right-wing organizations.

"Why is the Green Party being silenced by the Debate Commission while Rebel News and True North get press credentials? Something doesn’t add up," the party said.

The Leaders' Debates Commission decided to rescind its invitation to Green Party co-leader Jonathan Pedneault to participate in this week's election debates. It said the Green Party has not fulfilled two of three conditions for participation: having candidates in 90 per cent of ridings, polling at four per cent support 28 days before election day and having at least one sitting MP at dissolution.

A truck displaying anti-Carney ads on screens drove by the event site as leaders arrived Wednesday. Authorized by ForCanada — which describes itself as a registered third-party campaign group and was founded by Rebel Media's Ezra Levant — the truck displayed messages suggesting Carney has been compromised by China and the World Economic Forum.

Dimitri Soudas, former director of communications in Stephen Harper's PMO, told The Canadian Press that it's time to dismantle the Debates Commission and allow broadcasters "to take over again."

"They just keep putting a new nail onto their coffin," Soudas said, arguing it handled the Green Party situation unprofessionally.

"Tonight, I understand and I can sympathize and I can accept you want to allow for non-traditional media to be a part of the media room, but they literally allowed one news organization to monopolize the majority of the questions to the leaders. Let me put it bluntly: I don't think the Debates Commission can organize a two-car funeral."

The French-language leaders debate was abruptly rescheduled to minimize a conflict with a Montreal Canadiens hockey game. In a statement, Radio-Canada and the Leaders’ Debates Commission said they were "recognizing Canadians’ passion for hockey" in their decision to move the debate.

Party leaders will face off in an English-language debate on Thursday.

Debates still matter. Especially this one:

Good morning. Tonight is the only official English language debate of the federal election campaign, which begins tonight at 7 p.m. ET in Montreal. More on that below, along with the steady rate decision and how to move with pets.

Let the debate games begin:

Leaders squared off in the French-language leaders’ debate over how Canada should respond to U.S. President Donald Trump and how to support the economy during a trade crisis, while reaching for crucial Quebec votes.

Things were getting interesting even before it started. Last night’s debate started two hours earlier than planned to accommodate a pivotal Habs hockey game. Très Canadien. (And for good reason, they clinched a spot in playoffs).

Then, early Wednesday morning, the Leaders’ Debates Commission uninvited the Green Party, because the Greens no longer qualified after intentionally reducing the number of running candidates, falling short of the 309 they needed. This is the first time the Greens have missed a federal leaders’ debate since 2011.

Some commentators are calling this election the most important of a generation. Here are a few questions to help you prep for watching tonight’s final debate before voting day on April 28.

Are debates still important in the age of social media?

Short answer: yes. Aside from being entertaining theatre, it is especially important for underdog parties to speak on a platform they rarely get. And despite how accessible candidates are online, Meta’s ban on news in Canada still prohibits sharing journalism on its platforms.

“You can get a sense of leaders that you have not seen before, especially this is an election where the Prime Minister has been in politics for three months,” Globe political columnist Campbell Clark said on The Decibel podcast.

As political feature writer Shannon Proudfoot points out, there’s something to be said about Canadians collectively watching the debate, particularly before a holiday weekend.

“I think there’s real value for just attention being collectively directed,” she said. “They’re thinking about it. They’re maybe talking about it with family and friends. That seems like a good thing to me, no matter what.”

How do you win a debate?

“I think of them sort of as a microcosm of an election campaign in general, in that there’s a lot of confirmation bias at work,” said Shannon. “I think it tends to just confirm or crystallize what people already believe.”

Canadians are watching for strong talking points and hot comebacks. But what we remember most are the major flubs. This is what lead Campbell and Shannon to the idea that debates can’t be won, but they can be lost.

“There’s a loss aversion problem that comes with debates for political leaders, because it’s not necessarily that they’re going to move the dials, it’s that they could and they could end up getting knocked out,” said Campbell.

What is Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s challenge?

The Conservatives have faced loud criticism during the campaign over a lack of media accessibility, and Poilievre will not be able to control the questions from the debate. A softer side of him has emerged the past weeks, but he will have a delicate line to walk on stage.

“Poilievre, I think, risks that if he turns in the ‘best debate performance’ he can, and wipes the floor with Mark Carney, he actually does himself a disservice because he could come off looking really angry, unserious, attack dog,” Shannon said. “If he goes too hard at it, I think he solidifies his own greatest weakness in the minds of voters.”

What is Liberal Leader Mark Carney’s challenge?

In Campbell’s eyes, one of Carney’s potential downfalls could be that he simply doesn’t have the political stage experience after years in the private sector. After accusations of coming off as patronizing, Carney appears to have improved on that front.

“You don’t want to appear to be too much of, how should I put this, a high-handed elitist who has an Oxford degree. That can come off wrong to the average Canadian in their living room,” Campbell said. “So if he tries to tell people, ‘I know how the world works, and I am an economist,’ you can take that too far.”

What does success look like for the other parties?

It’s hard to deny this has become a two-horse race, even for the NDP.

“For the NDP and the bloc, they have similar goals, which is to show that they are useful, even if they are not government,” said Campbell. “And that’s always the case for the Bloc Québécois, but it’s the case earlier in the campaign for the NDP than it usually is.”

“We’ve seen Jagmeet Singh shift his messaging in the last week or so from ‘I’m running to be Prime Minister’ to ‘okay, I’m not, but you should vote in some NDP MPs to hold some balance of power to kind of keep the Liberals from being an unstoppable juggernaut,’” said Shannon.

Which topics should you watch for?

Earlier this week, CBC/Radio-Canada said the debate will cover topics such as affordability, climate, public safety and security, and of course, tariffs and threats to Canada. TVO host Steve Paikin will question the leaders over the two-hour event.

But patients, medical organizations and physicians say that health can’t take a back seat in the election campaign, writes Kelly Grant. It will be worth watching if leaders weave in

Trump's Easter Message Is Quite the Opposite of Biden's

What a difference a year makes. Last year, Easter Sunday fell on March 31, so naturally, President Joe Biden, a “very devout” Catholic, made a big deal out of the Resurrection Transgender Day of Visibility, which happened to coincide with the most holy of Christian days.

His Easter message was simple: “To all those gathering in Churches and Homes around the world today: Happy Easter. May God bless and keep you.”

Compare that to the following message about Transgender Day of Visibility: “On Transgender Day of Visibility, we celebrate the joy, strength, and absolute courage of some of the bravest people I know. Today, we show millions of transgender and nonbinary Americans that we see them, they belong, and they should be treated with dignity and respect.” Below the message was a large image with the hollow leftist phrase, “Trans rights are human rights.”

It was made abundantly clear that Transgender Day of Visibility was more important to Biden because it represents a key liturgical holiday in the gender-confusion celebration calendar dreamed up by LGBTQ+ activists.

In stark contrast, President Donald Trump appropriately started this year’s Easter celebration on April 13, Palm Sunday. He didn’t have to contend with the “disputing holiday” — nor would he if presented with that choice because this president doesn’t kowtow to the gender ideologues.

If this had happened a few years ago, it would have been a national news story. But as it turns out, bodycam footage (AKA letting people see the truth with their own eyes) is bad for the people in the propaganda business:

Leeth crashed on the Ohio Turnpike. When an Ohio State Trooper stopped to respond to the crash, Leeth walked out of his vehicle, assaulted the officer, then stole his police cruiser.

The officer used a Taser but the man, later identified as Leeth, jumped into the officer's marked police vehicle and sped east into Pennsylvania with the overhead flashers on.

That is what you call an imminent threat to public safety.

It doesn't matter if Leeth was on drugs, demon-possessed, or a gleeful criminal. The job of police is to make sure a perp like that is stopped.

Pennsylvania State Police gave chase before stopping the car, which flipped and landed upside down in pull-off area on the turnpike.

When Pennsylvania troopers approached the car, an altercation ensued, during which the man was fatally shot, police said.

An illegal Chinese migrant was arrested in California after sneaking onto a military base and refusing to leave, heightening fears Beijing spies are trying to infiltrate sensitive sites in the U.S.

Border Patrol agents headed to a Marine Corps base after an unnamed Chinese national 'who entered the base [without] authorization' also 'ignored orders to leave.'

'Subject was confirmed to be in the country illegally. His purpose & intent behind his actions are still being investigated,' Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino wrote on X Friday.

A CBP official told DailyMail.com that the Chinese national drove onto the 29 Palms Marine base on March 27 without authorization and was then immediately detained. 

This most recent breach comes as the U.S. is increasingly dealing with sensitive military bases being infiltrated by the Chinese. 

There have been more than 100 instances in which U.S. military bases were infiltrated by Chinese nationals over the last several years. 

Chinese nationals posing as 'tourists' wandered onto a missile launch site in New Mexico, according to a Wall Street Journal report last year.

Others staged as scuba divers in order to get close to a Florida rocket launch site, and another group claimed to be staying on an Army base in Alaska. 

The operatives have reportedly claimed to be tourists who are 'lost' and unable to find their way to a Burger King or McDonalds coincidentally close to a U.S. military base.

Government officials say that Chinese nationals are often 'pressed into service' and required to report their findings back to the Chinese government. 

According to the report, the FBI, Defense Department and other agencies have been aware of the infiltrations and have held summits in order to address the problem. 

The infiltration comes just months after the Chinese spy balloon crossed over the U.S., which officials say had rudimentary flight controls, passed over a number of nuclear missile facilities in late January and early February.

The balloon was eventually shot down by an F-22 Raptor fighter off the coast of South Carolina. 

President Joe Biden caught heat for downplaying the Chinese spy balloon that drifted across the U.S., alleging that Beijing may not have known about the operation. 

Most of the Chinese nationals who are caught are cited, given small fines and asked not to return, as trespassing is generally not considered a federal crime.

A spokesperson with the Chinese embassy in D.C. called the report 'purely ill-intentioned fabrications.'

'We urge the relevant U.S. officials to abandon the Cold War mentality, stop groundless accusations, and do more things that are conducive to enhancing mutual trust between the two countries and friendship between the two peoples,' Liu Pengyu said. 

In what the Journal described as a 'recent case,' a group of Chinese citizens claimed that they were staying at a Holiday Inn which is located in Fort Wainright, Alaska. Security at the base became immediately suspicious as tourism in the area is extremely unusual. The base plays host to the US Army's 11th Airborne Division. 

Emily Harding, a former official with the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, told WSJ that the Chinese spy operation is more of a numbers game. 

'The advantage the Chinese have is they are willing to throw people at collection in large numbers. If a few of them get caught, it will be very difficult for the U.S. government to prove anything beyond trespassing, and those who don't get caught are likely to collect something useful,' Harding said. 

In 2019, three Chinese nationals were sentenced to prison for illegally taking photographs at a Florida Navy base.

Lyuyou Liao, 27, was sentenced to 12 months in prison, after pleading guilty to illegally entering NAS Key West and taking photographs and video footage of property on the Truman Annex of the station.

Two others, Jielun Zhang, 25, and Yuhao Wang, 24, were sentenced to 12 months and nine months in prison, respectively, for entering the base in January 2019, and taking photographs of military and naval infrastructure.

The same year, a Chinese woman was sentenced to eight months in prison after she entered then-President Donald Trump's estate Mar-a-Lago along while carrying electronic devices and two passports. 

Also in 2019, two Chinese citizens were expelled from the U.S. after attempting to drive on to the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia Beach, reported the Virginia Pilot.
