What about excessive punishment, right? If somebody got violent there, what is… is it like life in prison? Is that reasonable? #2. TRUMP’s Shocking Plan for Greenland:

Why does Greenland matter to the US?

The US has long maintained a security interest in Greenland. After Nazi Germany occupied mainland Denmark during World War II, the US invaded Greenland, establishing military and radio stations across the territory.

After the war, US forces remained in Greenland. Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, has been operated by the US ever since.

 

In 1951, a defence agreement with Denmark granted the US a significant role in the defence of the territory, including the right to build and maintain military bases.

"If Russia were to send missiles towards the US, the shortest route for nuclear weapons would be via the North Pole and Greenland," said Marc Jacobsen, an associate professor at the Royal Danish Defence College.

"That's why the Pituffik Space Base is immensely important in defending the US."

 

China and Russia have begun building up their Arctic military capabilities in recent years, according to an Arctic Institute paper. The paper called for the US to further develop its presence in the Arctic to counter its rivals.

On Wednesday, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Denmark was open to discussions with the US, adding that Washington had "legitimate" interests in the region.

 

"We see a Russia that is arming itself. We see a China that is also starting to take an interest," Rasmussen said.

Trump is also likely interested in the mining potential across Greenland's vast landmass, Mr Jacobsen added.


"Today, of special interest are the rare earth minerals, which have not yet been mined but are in the southern part of Greenland. These are immensely important in all kinds of technologies, from cell phones to wind turbines."

 

#3. Border PATROL:

The Border Patrol has largely avoided the scrutiny that police have come under in recent years. That should change: the Border Patrol’s powers are increasingly authoritarian, with few legal checks, and expanding throughout the United States.

 

Inspired by the violent culture of the Texas Rangers, the US Border Patrol was established in 1924 as a relatively small agency with little oversight and limited domain. Existing only along the US-Mexico border, the agency’s early goal was to enforce immigration restrictions.

 

Today, with more than 60,000 employees, seemingly endless jurisdiction, increasingly sophisticated use of surveillance technology, and a continued lack of oversight, the US Border Patrol has become one of the largest — and most threatening — enforcement agencies in the world.

 

On July 1, 2020, former acting secretary of Customs and Border Patrol Mark Morgan tweeted that the agency was working alongside local law enforcement across the nation to protect cities amid protests of George Floyd’s murder by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. “As a federal law enforcement agency, it’s our duty and responsibility to respond when our partners request support,” he asserted on Twitter.

Trudeau will not seek re-election in his Montreal Riding:

The Liberals say they have 129 candidates nominated out of 343 federal ridings, while the Conservatives say they have close to 221 and the New Democrats say they have 93.                                                       By The Canadian Press

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he will not run again in his Montreal riding in the next general election.

The news comes just over a week after Trudeau announced he will step down as leader of the Liberal party as soon as a new leader is elected.

 

Trudeau was first elected in 2008 for the Montreal riding of Papineau in a narrow victory over the Bloc Québécois.

He led the Liberals to victory seven years later and has been prime minister now for more than nine years.

The Liberals will choose a new leader to replace Trudeau after a national leadership race on March 9.

 

Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney is expected to formally enter the race to replace Trudeau Thursday, with former finance minister Chrystia Freeland expected to follow a few days later.

Don’t call it a comeback


It’s alive!

After a slow start to the year, the stock market finally showed signs of life thanks to blowout bank earnings and better-than-expected inflation data. The S&P 500 finished Wednesday up 1.83%, while the Dow (1.65%) and tech-heavy Nasdaq composite (2.45%) posted strong days. 

 

Let’s start with Wall Street. Big US banks represent the unofficial kickoff to earnings season, and they didn’t disappoint. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo all beat analysts expectations. 

 

JPMorgan saw a 50% year-over-year increase in profits for the fourth quarter while Goldman’s profits jumped an incredible 105%. The banking boom was largely driven by classic Wall Street businesses like corporate dealmaking, capital raising, and trading. 

 

December’s inflation report also put extra wind in the market’s sails. 

At first glance — inflation rose for the third straight month — the reading might not seem great. But a closer look showed the consumer price index’s year-over-year increase matched consensus expectations, which is good. 

What’s even better, though, is core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, was slightly below expectations. It also came in lower than November’s number. 

 

Before you get ahead of yourself, don’t expect a slew of rate cuts. Instead, the data calmed investors’ nerves by slowing the troubling rise of the 10-year Treasury yield, which dropped 0.14%.

“Core Inflation isn’t accelerating and that’s the story. The market may have had its hair on fire about inflation running away again, but the data do not support that conclusion,” said Jamie Cox, Managing Partner for Harris Financial Group.

 

So, what’s next for Wall Street?


In the short term, bankers might finally enjoy some healthy bonuses after a few slim years. Workers are starting to find out about their year-end comp.

Bigger picture, it’s more momentum for the industry’s job market. After a lull in activity, firms are bolstering their ranks across the board for what appears to be an active 2025. 

 

The private markets are one area that’ll remain in the spotlight. The sector, which includes less-liquid investments like private equity and private credit that come with higher fees, is of particular interest to BlackRock. The $11.6 trillion asset manager sees it as the key to its next stage of evolution, according to CEO Larry Fink.

 

One evolution Fink didn’t discuss was who will take over when he’s gone. That’s despite the recent departure of executive Mark Wiedman, which reignited questions about what life after Larry will look like at BlackRock. 

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon was a little bit more forthcoming with his own retirement plans … sort of. When asked by an analyst who his successor was, Dimon said there are a number of great candidates, but a decision hasn’t been made. 

 

And even if the bank did have someone in mind, there’s no guarantee things won’t change, Dimon added.

 Before the opening bell: US stock futures are mixed early Thursday, as investors await earnings reports from Morgan Stanley and Bank of America.

 

1. One of Trump’s opps is feeling good about the economy. Despite being a longtime Trump critic, Anthony Scaramucci is pretty optimistic about the economy under the incoming 47th president. He sees Trump’s pro-growth policies and potential crypto legislation as an economic boon — but he’s still concerned about some of Trump’s other promises.

 

2. Hindenburg Research is tapping out. Nate Anderson, founder of the short-selling firm, said he's disbanding it, once they've completed all outstanding projects. Hindenburg gained fame for its forensic financial research, often focusing on what it argued to be fraudulent or misleading corporate behavior. Anderson said he plans to share the firm's investigation tactics publicly.  

 

3. Dividend stocks are so back. Large-cap stocks have dominated the market, but a change could be coming, according to Morningstar. As their valuations continue to climb, dividend stocks might become more palatable. Morningstar highlighted dividend stocks in four specific sectors savvy investors should pay attention to.

1. Mark Zuckerberg lost $60 billion in five years — and he’s going to keep spending. Despite persistent predictions that the VR and AR headset market will boom, consumers just aren’t interested. Meta lost big on the tech in the last few years, but that hasn’t deterred Zuck, who keeps telling investors they should expect more losses in the future.

 

2. Exclusive: Insight Partners raises $12.5 billion for its newest set of funds. It’s the largest sum raised by a venture capital firm in over two years, according to PitchBook data. Insight’s $12.5 billion may be less than its initial funding goal, but it’s still an impressive get as the industry looks to mount a comeback.

 

3. “TikTok refugees” flock to Chinese app RedNote. While some Americans are coping with a possible TikTok ban through memes, competitors like Texas-based app Clapper are seizing the moment. Other Americans are heading to the Chinese app Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote. It might be worth learning how to use it — but some members of Congress are already taking aim.

1. WFH + Fridays = OOO. For some remote workers, the W in WFH Friday is a bit of a stretch. They’re turning every weekend into a three-day weekend, and they don’t feel particularly bad about it, either.

 

2. Home Depot cofounders were investigated by the FBI in the ‘70s and ‘80s, new public records show. The FBI was investigating Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank over claims they used a slush fund in an attempt to bribe California Handy Dan employees to decertify their union, newly obtained records show. The investigation ended in 1983 when a prosecutor determined the case was too old and evidence was “insufficient.”

 

3. Double-booked billionaires. January 20 is not only Trump’s inauguration but also the first day of the World Economic Forum’s high-profile conference in Davos, Switzerland. Conflicted guests will have to choose between missing potential face time with the new president or a day of brushing shoulders with the global elite. Jeff Bezos, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi won’t be missing out on Trump’s big day.

Behind the smiling mask of Biden's Administration:

On an episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience" released Friday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg painted a picture of Biden administration officials berating Facebook staff during requests to remove certain content from the social media platform.

 

"Basically, these people from the Biden administration would call up our team and, like, scream at them and curse," Zuckerberg told podcast host and comedian Joe Rogan. "It just got to this point where we were like, 'No, we're not gonna, we're not gonna take down things that are true. That's ridiculous.'"

 

The White House did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment about Zuckerberg’s remarks.

Smith Trumps Trudeau AND Poilievre:

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith flew down to Florida over the weekend for two private meetings with President-elect, TRUMP at Mar-A-LAGO, Fl.

 

Following her meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said that tariffs are imminent when Trump is sworn in as President on Jan. 20.

Smith was invited to Mar-a-Lago as a guest of Kevin O’Leary, Shark Tank star and a recent business partner of Smith.

Despite the imminent tariffs, Smith emphasized in a Monday press conference with reporters that avoiding them will require Canada to leverage its energy muscle. 

 

According to Smith, trade deficits are a key irritant to the United States, but she said Canada buys more goods and services from the United States than vice versa when energy is excluded. She noted that the United States has a trade surplus of $58 billion sans energy, confirmed by National Bank of Canada’s report. 

 

She added that Canada sells discounted oil to the United States. For example, $100 billion of Canadian exported oil turns into $300 billion of value-added products that the United States can sell.

Smith said that when Trump is sworn in on Jan. 20, around 100 executive orders will be incoming, and there are no suggestions that he will change course on the tariffs.

 

Trump’s proposed tariffs would shrink Canada’s GDP by 2.6%, costing each Canadian $1,900 annually, according to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. The United States’ GDP would also shrink by 1.6%, costing Americans $1,300 per year.

Chief Economist of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Stephen Tapp, said the tariff could push Canada’s economy into a recession by the middle of 2025.

 

“Make no mistake, if Trump imposed these tariffs, it would represent a significant negative shock to the U.S. economy. It would raise costs for businesses, make American production less competitive internationally, and raise prices even more for consumers who’ve recently suffered through the pandemic and the highest inflation in generations,” said Tapp.

 

Alberta’s premier said negotiations are challenging given Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announced resignation, meaning Canada doesn’t have a federal representative at the table. Therefore, Smith said she’s been speaking with the U.S. administration independently.

 

Smith reiterated that the impending tariffs were why she’s been calling for an immediate election.

When asked whether she would consider cutting off energy supply to the United States, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said, “Everything’s on the table.” 

 

Smith rebuked Joly’s comments in the press conference, saying that oil and gas fall under provincial jurisdiction and that she would not be implementing any such threat. “And, you should never, ever, threaten something you can’t do,” said Smith. She suggested that Joly pick up a map and see where the pipeline Enbridge Line 5 travels. If supply were to be cut off, Ontario and Quebec would also be cut off.

 

“There’s no point in making empty threats that cannot be executed on,” said Smith. “And, we cannot do anything that harms Canadians in a substantial way.”

Despite Alberta being an energy exporting behemoth, Smith said she is not expecting Alberta to be granted any tariff exemptions.

 

As for the appropriate retaliatory response, Smith said it’s too soon to tell, and what the tariffs look like on Jan. 20 will determine the proper response. However, the premier warned that retaliatory taxes against the United States would also make everything for Canadians more expensive.

 

The United States produces 13 million barrels of oil daily while consuming 21 million, according to Smith. She said this oil and gas needs to come from somewhere, and there are no better options than Alberta. 

“They can get it from Venezuela and Iran and Iraq, but I think we’re a much better partner than that,” said Smith. “I’m looking at using our energy relationship in a different way than I’m hearing other Canadian leaders talk about it. I’m talking about using the basis of our strong energy relationship as the reason why we shouldn’t have tariffs on any of our Canadian products.” 

 

Canada’s premiers will meet with Trudeau in Ottawa on Jan. 15 to discuss the looming tariff threat and the best path forward. True North previously reported that Smith will attend Trump’s inauguration in person.

The premiers will be meeting in Washington, D.C., approximately a month after Trump takes office to discuss how the tariffs are affecting Canada.

As the US Supreme Court weighs a TikTok ban, American users are sticking it to Uncle Sam by digitally migrating en masse to China and out of reach of their own government.

 

The judgment is expected any day now, and it could mean that the popular online app will no longer be available for new downloads in the US. In the absence of workarounds, it also means that Washington succeeds in censoring an online platform over which it has no control. And that’s clearly the issue, as lawmakers have long been pressuring the Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell off its American operations to a US entity, effectively handing over control of user data to the US in order to avoid the ban – which the company has so far refused to do.

 

Are we seriously supposed to believe that data held by an American company is in safer hands, as lawmakers want us to believe? There’s an easy litmus test to answer that. Would you be more willing to hand over all of your personal information to your own government, which has full jurisdiction over every aspect of your life – or, alternatively, to a government on the other side of the planet? 

 

In any case, American TikTokers have already made up their minds. The app is now rife with videos of them packing their bags for their “digital migration” to a different Chinese platform – RedNote (known in China as Xiaohongshu).

 

These self-described “TikTok refugees” have been in the process of saying their goodbyes with tributes to their “personal Chinese spies” in TikTok videos, including some made with artificial intelligence, showing them doing things like scrolling on their phone and wandering around making videos for TikTok...

·        while a Chinese “spy” dressed in a military-style uniform laughs and cries along with them.

·        Or sits at the table with them on a restaurant patio while they film their food. Or smiles while they’re hanging out with buddies at the bar and taking group selfies.

·        Or sits on a lounge chair on a beach while their “American target” films their beachside vacation antics.
