Saturday, April 26 | 2 Corinthians 5:1–15

 

Even though it is something we must all face, many people are uncomfortable when talking about death. Anticipating death is not easy, even for those who believe in the hope of the resurrection. The certainty of death makes most people anxious. But as believers, we know that this is not an end, but that through Christ it is a beginning.


The apostle Paul acknowledges these conflicting feelings when he states that “while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life” (v. 4).



Embodied life is part of God’s design for humanity. To exchange this “earthly tent” for a “heavenly dwelling,” which is “a building from God” and “an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands,” is the final move in our redemptive experience (vv. 1–2). It does not happen immediately upon death but is something that Paul associates with the events that attend Christ’s second coming and the final judgment (v. 10).


The remedy for the anxiety we feel about the prospect of temporary separation from bodily life comes from the confidence of our faith (vv. 6–8). Its foundation rests in the knowledge that for the Christian to be absent from the body is to be “at home with the Lord.” This hope energizes our service in the present.


We are not complacent toward God but “make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it” (v. 9). The certainty of judgment to come produces a combination of love for God and others, mixed with healthy reverence, that is the prime motivation for sharing the gospel (vv. 11–15).

Youth mental health problems: are they actually worse today?


Overall, three in five (58%) people in Canada think youth mental health problems are either no worse than they were in the past or are increasing simply because today’s youth are less resilient.

This finding comes from analysing responses to two questions exploring people’s true perceptions of the youth mental health crisis:

  • · 41% of Canadians think mental health problems were just as common among young people in the past, they just weren’t identified as mental health problems back then. This compares with 45% who believe there has been a real increase in the proportion of young people with mental health problems today.

  • · And while over half (54%) of those who feel there has been a real increase in youth mental health problems say it’s because the circumstances facing young people today are more difficult than they were in the past, around four in 10 (37%) say it’s because young people today are less resilient than young people were in the past.

Please explain to me how migrants from another country can afford to live in Ontario and Vancouver when our own people in Canada have to move to the less expensive province of Alberta?

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump suggested another delay to his higher so-called “reciprocal” tariffs was unlikely, raising pressure on nations to negotiate trade deals with his administration.


 

Asked about the possibility of granting another 90-day pause, Trump cast that scenario as “unlikely,” while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday. Trump also said that he would not drop tariffs on China, the world’s second largest economy, unless Beijing offers “something substantial” in return.

Trump said he believed financial markets were adjusting to his tariff policy, downplaying the volatility that has hit equity and bond markets this month after he announced plans to hit about 60 US trading partners with higher duties.

 

“When you look at what’s happening, I think so, yeah. I said there’d be a transition,” Trump said about the market reaction. “People haven’t understood it, now they are starting to understand it.”

Pressed on what concessions he’d like to see from Beijing, Trump said that he would like China to open its economy — but that he believed it was a non-starter so was not sure he would pursue it as part of the tariff talks.

 

“That would be great. That would be a big win. But I’m not even sure I’m going to ask for it, because they don’t want it open, they don’t want it open,” Trump said.

Friday saw a volatile session on Wall Street with stocks trimming most of the day’s advance as traders parsed the president’s conflicting signals about the progress he is making in tariff negotiations. The S&P 500 was still set for its longest winning run since January.

 

Trump in recent days has offered mixed messages about the status of talks with China, even as Beijing has denied that negotiations between the world’s two largest economies are taking place.

“We’re meeting with China. We’re doing fine with everybody,” Trump said in an interview with Time Magazine published earlier Friday.

 

But he also told Time he would not call President Xi Jinping if his Chinese counterpart does not call him first. Then Trump said such a call had occurred, without giving details.

“He’s called. And I don’t think that’s a sign of weakness on his behalf,” Trump said.

The U.S. president declined to answer when asked by reporters Friday when he spoke with Xi, saying, “I’ll let you know at the appropriate time. Let’s see if we can make a deal.”

 

Trump earlier this month announced sharp tariff increases on about 60 countries but then quickly paused those measures for three months to allow trading partners to negotiate deals, keeping in place a baseline 10% rate during the negotiating period. That set off a flurry of visits from foreign delegations eager to strike a deal, but Xi’s government has taken a more defiant stance.

In the Time interview, Trump also said he expected to wrap up trade deals with US partners “over the next three to four weeks.”

 

“I’ll be finished. Now, some countries may come back and ask for an adjustment, and I’ll consider that, but I’ll basically be, with great knowledge, setting — ready,” he added.

Trump told reporters later Friday at the White House that he is “getting along very well with Japan” and an agreement is “very close.”

 

Trump in the interview also pushed back on reports that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick convinced him to delay his reciprocal tariffs and said he “wasn’t worried” about the turmoil in bond and equity markets that greeted his higher duties.

“They didn’t tell me. I did that,” Trump said. “The bond market was getting the yips, but I wasn’t.”

Leading Republican lawmakers have expressed skepticism over the news that Virginia Giuffre, the most prominent accuser of Jeffrey Epstein, has committed suicide.

 


Giuffre was found dead at her farm in Western Australia Friday, with a statement 

from her family declaring that the years of sexual abuse she suffered had driven 

her to it.



Earlier this month Giuffre posted on Instagram that she had been seriously injured in a car accident and had been given just four days to live.


She shared a photograph of herself with visible head injuries adding: "This year has been the worst start to a new year, but I won't bore anyone with the details but I think it important to note that when a school bus driver comes at you driving 110km as we were slowing for a turn that no matter what your car is made of it might as well be a tin can.

The woman, wearing a dark hoodie, also entered the family home.

Ms Giuffre's family confirmed her death in a statement, writing that she had lost her life to suicide after grappling with being a sex trafficking victim in her teens.
