Ukraine is too corrupt to join NATO, the US is set to tell leader Volodymyr Zelensky in a major blow to his nation's security ambitions.
The defence bloc will request at its annual summit next week, in Washington DC, that Ukraine takes 'additional steps before formal membership talks progress', a senior US official told the Telegraph.
Zelensky has been pushing for NATO ascension after Russia's brutal invasion ends to protect itself from future invasion, as the pact compels its members to militarily defend allies if they are attacked.
But corruption, among other issues, has been a major thorn in the Ukrainian leader's side, blocking further relations with the West from developing.
In 2022, after Ukraine formally applied for EU ascension, the EU Commission wrote of Ukraine that while 'preventing and combating corruption has been particularly high on the Ukrainian reform agenda since the Revolution of Dignity' in 2014, 'corruption remains a serious challenge.'
Zelensky appears to be tackling the problem head on, particularly in the military. In September, he fired all six of his deputy defence ministers with no explanation weeks after dismissing his top defence minister.
The US has recognised his efforts, with a State Department official telling the Telegraph: 'We have to step back and applaud everything that Ukraine has done in the name of reforms over the last two-plus years.'
'As they continue to make those reforms, we want to commend them, we want to talk about additional steps that need to be taken, particularly in the area of anti-corruption. It is a priority for many of us around the table,' the source added.
NATO has given Ukraine a list of reforms it will be expected to carry out before it qualifies for membership, which officials said Zelensky was working through.
'That’s something Nato has been doing quietly under the radar that helps them get closer to membership', a source said.
While Ukraine is working on furthering its relations with the West, Putin is doing the same with China. The despot is meeting with Xi Jinping at a Eurasian security and defence club in Kazakhstan today.
Putin and the Chinese president have expanded the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a club founded in 2001 with Russia, China and Central Asian powers, to include India, Iran and Pakistan as a counterweight to the West.
Putin will hold a series of bilateral meetings on Wednesday on the sidelines of the July 3-4 SCO summit in the Kazakh capital, Astana, the Kremlin said.
He is due to meet Xi, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and the leaders of Azerbaijan, Mongolia and Pakistan before an informal dinner hosted by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
India said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected in Moscow later this month, will not attend. He is sending Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar instead.
Russia and China regard the SCO, which promotes common approaches to external security threats such as drug trafficking and focuses on countering any domestic instability, as a means to project their influence across Asia.
"The leaders of the SCO member countries will discuss the current state and prospects for further deepening multifaceted cooperation within the organisation and improving its activities," the Kremlin said in a statement.
At last year's virtual summit, the group issued a statement critical of what it called the negative impact of "unilateral and unlimited expansion of global missile defence systems by certain countries or groups of countries", without directly referring to NATO expansion and Western military assistance to Ukraine.

Wilgus is being held in IK-17, a penal colony in Mordovia, Russia.According to Radio Free Europe, since Wilgus was imprisoned, there reportedly have been at least nine other Americans detained by Russia and two notable prisoner swaps between the United States and Russia involving Americans detained well after his imprisonment. According to the report, there are discussions about other prisoner swaps. Wilgus is not among those mentioned in the article.In a March 24, 2023, op-ed for the New York Post, Wilgus’s parents, James and Bella Wilgus, stated:

Jimmy Wilgus, who may very well die in captivity in a Russian prison, deserves support from the State Department. In addition to the unfathomable immigration crisis that has jolted the nation during the Biden administration, millions of foreign nationals have been granted visas to enter the United States without proper vetting that includes in-person interviews and the collection of fingerprints similar to the Visa Express program used by three of the 9/11 hijackers. How could this occur more than two decades after the worst terrorist attack on American soil? Blame it on COVID-19, according to the explanation offered by the federal officials charged with safeguarding the nation.
The Department of State (DoS) issues visas to individuals seeking entry into the U.S. on a temporary basis for study, tourism, medical treatment, business, and temporary work. When the pandemic hit in 2020 the agency waived requirements to conduct consular interviews and collect fingerprints for some nonimmigrant visa applicants and 7.1 million got in without proper screening between 2020 and 2023, a recently published federal audit reveals. The agency said the waiver was issued to address staffing limitations and visa backlogs, according to the probe which was conducted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General. In its report, which includes multiple redactions to supposedly protect sensitive information, the watchdog refers to the enormous amount of visa waivers as an “urgent issue” that must be addressed.
The security lapse was created by the State Department when the task of screening the foreign visa holders was passed along to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the overwhelmed frontline agency charged with keeping terrorists and their weapons out of the U.S. during an unprecedented onslaught of illegal immigrants. Unbelievably the Inspector General found that CBP, which must balance facilitating lawful travel and trade with protecting land and seaports amid a deluge of migrants, was not informed which foreign visa holders arriving at the U.S. border were not properly vetted by the State Department. “CBP Office of Field Operations (OFO) port directors at some U.S. ports of entry had not been aware of the interview and fingerprint waiver program,” the report states, adding that it was not until March 2024 that the State Department began providing CBP with information on visa holders who were not screened.
It is not clear why visa applicants are still not vetted abroad by consular offices even though the pandemic is no longer an issue.Even when CBP officials finally began receiving the information from the State Department involving individuals whose requirement for consular interviews had been waived, management chose not to conduct thorough checks because it would “inundate” the process. “CBP OFO officials told us that no formal notification was provided to the Field Offices and frontline officers because CBP did not want to overload the officers with information,” investigators write in the report. “Further, they added that CBP receives hundreds of alerts each day, but officials must prioritize what information is shared with frontline officers.” CBP officials told the DHS IG that, instead of providing officers with access to the information, they plan to work with the National Targeting Center to identify any risks posed by visa holders who had their interview waived by the State Department.
This information is alarming considering CBP is responsible for screening all foreign visitors and returning American citizens upon arrival at a United States port of entry (POE). Just a few days ago, the agency came under fire for failing to use technology, procedures, and coordination to adequately protect the border resulting in the entry of criminals, suspected terrorists, and other nefarious actors into the country.
A federal probe found that the agency used varied and sometimes inconsistent inspection procedures for travelers arriving in vehicles at land ports of entry and that it does not have the technology to perform biometric matching on travelers arriving in vehicles at the crossings. Specifically, CBP uses non-standard inspection procedures for vehicle passengers and fails to query all vehicle occupants to identify criminal warrants, national security concerns to border crossing history before admitting them into the U.S. The last thing this agency needs is the added duty of screening foreign visa applicants, which is supposed to be performed by consular offices abroad.

“Society is fragmenting into smaller communities based on common interests and backgrounds, increasing social polarization,” reads the report.
Hurray! Is that supposed to be a negative thing? Authorities need to recognize what genuine diversity looks like. And it's not forcing everyone into a common space in the name of equity and inclusion. It's giving diverse peoples a space of their own so that they have an equal opportunity to be included in the benefits of the nation.
“Far-right” women contributing to threats against democracy: RCMP report:
An RCMP warning about citizen movements threatening democracy takes note that women in particular are being drawn to the “far-right.”
Citing dubious statistics by anti-hate researchers, the RCMP’s recently published 2023 Environmental Scan highlights the supposed increase in radicalization driven by factors such as socioeconomic instability, polarization and political distrust.
One of the chief social concerns threatening democracy is the rise of mass citizen movements according to the federal police force.
“Society is fragmenting into smaller communities based on common interests and backgrounds, increasing social polarization,” reads the report.
“Democracies around the world are under threat from large-scale movements and citizen protests.”
These push factors, exacerbated by the pandemic, are said to have created an environment conducive to the spread of far-right ideologies, particularly among women.
“Trends suggest that more women are gravitating towards far-right movements in Canada,” wrote the RCMP.
Author and University of Buckingham politics professor Eric Kaufmann told True North that the “gross exaggeration” of the threat level posed by the far-right was what he termed the “fascist scare” in his latest book.
“I think the threat level is, by any measure (terrorist incidents, hate crime convictions), negligible. More like a freak event such as being killed in a lightning strike than a high threat like dying from a virus or automobile accident,” Kaufmann told True North.
“Certainly less of a concern – when divided by its demographic constituency – than the threat from Islamism or foreign nationalist terrorism on Canadian soil.”
Instead, Kaufmann said the real threat was the “woke capture of institutions, which reduces trust in the system among the anti-woke majority of the public.”
The report cites Ontario Tech University researcher Barbara Perry’s controversial claim that 300 far-right groups were operating in Canada.
Since releasing her $366,985 taxpayer-funded study in 2020, Perry has never published the list of the alleged groups and has refused to release the research publicly.
Ontario Tech University has also attempted to block the study from public access in arguments filed to Ontario’s privacy commissioner. The release of the records is currently up for adjudication.
“This kind of exaggeration is typical in government reports about the far right. Instead of shadowy claims and anecdotal evidence, often based on self-reports or self-interested ‘anti-hate’ groups, I would instead rely on hate crime convictions data trends, and divide these by the denominator,” Kaufmann told True North.
“For instance, Islamist attacks should be divided by the Muslim population, or far-right attacks by the white population, to compare relative threat levels”
True North reached out to the RCMP to allow them to clarify the report and provide evidence to back up their claim.
In its report, the RCMP goes on to cite the Freedom Convoy as an example of so-called far-right mobilization that taps into rising populist sentiment.
The RCMP claims that, unlike traditional extremist groups, the far-right lacks a clear hierarchical structure.
Earlier this year, the national policing body also released a hate crimes report that noted an unexpected shift: hate groups in Canada are reportedly becoming more ethnically diverse.
Traditionally dominated by white males, these groups are now said to be recruiting from racialized communities, according to the report. The RCMP defines a hate group as any organization or collection of individuals that attack or vilify people based on characteristics such as race, religion, or gender identity.
“People who join hate groups come from all socioeconomic backgrounds, professions, and, perhaps surprisingly, they appear to be increasingly racially/ethnically diverse,” the report reads.
“In recent years, some hate groups in the United States and Canada have actively recruited members from racialized groups in an attempt to soften their public image and bolster recruitment.”

Back in January of this year, Joe Biden said that he had done all he could do on the immigration front without the help of Congress to appropriate funds to Border Patrol and help with policy reform. These comments didn’t sit well with the general public as illegal immigration has still been sky-high under the tenure of Joe Biden and his allies.
“I asked them the very day I got into office,” Joe Biden said, referring to Congress. “Give me the Border Patrol. Give me the judges. Give me the people who can stop this,” he added in January.

In June, he signed a series of executive orders that were supposed to help cut down on the amount of illegal immigrants who were crossing the border seeking asylum claims to be made to stay in the country. That was done without Congressional approval as an act of the executive office.
Now, he’s once again proving himself to be a liar and proving Donald Trump right that there’s plenty that the president needs to do to cut down on illegal immigration and get it all under control.
The Biden administration on Monday inked a deal with the Panamanian government to help stop illegal migration along the Darien Gap, a sign that the country’s new president is following through on a major campaign promise.
The White House announced a Memorandum of Understanding with Panama, an initiative that will deploy American screening officers to assist their government with deporting migrants who cross the Darien Gap, a vast jungle region between Panama and Colombia that hundreds of thousands of migrants trek across every year en route to the U.S. The announcement followed a pledge by then-presidential candidate Jose Raul Mulino to close Panama off to illegal immigration.
“Specifically, the United States will support Panama’s efforts to begin the swift, safe, and humane repatriation of migrants who do not have a legal basis to remain in Panama,” a White House statement read. “By returning such individuals to their country of origin, we will help deter irregular migration in the region and at our Southern border, and halt the enrichment of malign smuggling networks that prey on vulnerable migrants.”
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials with asylum screening experience will be dispatched to the Central American country to assist in the processing of migrants, according to an announcement from DHS. The Biden administration will also be providing funds to beef up Panama’s deportation infrastructure.
“Irregular migration is a regional challenge that requires a regional response,” Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement. “As the United States continues to secure our borders and remove individuals without a legal basis to remain, we are grateful for our partnership with Panama to manage the historic levels of migration across the Western Hemisphere.”
The announcement of the deal came on the same day Mulino was sworn into office, according to the Associated Press. Mayorkas was among those in attendance at the swearing in ceremony.
Mulino won the Panamanian presidential election earlier in May, beating his closest rival by nearly 10 percentage points, as he rode a wave of voter discontent over the nation’s slow economic growth and an endorsement from a popular former president. The 65-year-old attorney also campaigned on a pledge to put a stop to the illegal immigration that runs through the Darien Gap.
The jungle region has proven to be an incredible pipeline of South American illegal migration bound for the U.S.-Mexico border. Over half a million migrants passed through the region in 2023, over double the number that had crossed the year before, according to the Council of Foreign Relations.
However, many experts and Panamanian locals question the feasibility of closing down the Darien Gap, given the denseness of the jungle that makes it tough to police, the dangerous cartels that populate the area and the sheer number of migrants crossing.
America-side, much of the public is stunned that a foreign president is more concerned about stopping illegal immigration than Joe Biden has seemed to be during the first three and a half years of his tenure in the Oval Office.
Donald Trump has been saying for years and years now that a major part of stopping illegal immigration is cutting deals with foreign allies and foreign nationals who aren’t even closely allied to the United States.
That includes Mexico, Canada, Cuba, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Guatemala, and more. The U.S. president has a duty to be reaching good deals with all of these foreign governments to help put American safety first. It seems as though Joe Biden is only just now getting that during an election year. Convenient.

Biden Identifies as Proud Black Woman in botched effort to Reassure Voters of his Competence:
President Joe Biden recently had a chance to reassure his panicking allies. It did not go well.
The Democratic Party is in panic mode over the near-universal acknowledgment of President Joe Biden's decrepitude. Internal Democratic polling recently indicated that Biden is set for a humiliating defeat in November following his June debate performance. House and Senate candidates fear he may drag them down as well.
Biden was afforded an opportunity in an interview that aired Thursday on the black Philadelphia radio station 96.1FM to reassure his allies of his competence. It did not go well.
In his rambling interview with host Andrew Lawful-Sanders, Biden doubled down twice on the false suggestion that former President Donald Trump threatened a violent "bloodbath" should he lose the election and suggested further that his opponent "questioned the humanity of George Floyd." Biden emphasized the frequency with which he has appointed black judges and argued that his "bad debate" should not erase what he believes he has accomplished so far in his presidency.
What caught critics' attention, however, was not Biden's revisionism, his record of race-based hiring, or his desire to look past the debate, but rather his passing identification as a black woman.
"By the way, I'm proud to be, as I said, the first vice president, first black woman to serve with a black president. Proud to be involved of the first black woman on the Supreme Court," said Biden. "There's so much that we can do because, together, there's nothing — look. This is the United States of America."
Biden, who has previously adopted the life of another politician, appears to have conflated himself with his multiracial running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris.
The New York Times indicated that Biden campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa was quick to lash out at the media for taking note of Biden's latest gaffe.
'It's just my brain.'
"It was clear what President Biden meant when he was talking about his historic record, including a record number of appointments to the federal bench," said Moussa in reference to Biden's claim of being a black woman. "This is not news, and the media has passed the point of absurdity here."
In the same radio interview, Biden also struggled to make the point that American youth need people of their same race or creed in positions of power to look up to, just as he, as a much younger man, found a role model in John F. Kennedy.
"I'm the first president that got elected statewide in the state of Delaware when I was a kid," said Biden.
The president's subsequent comments indicated he may have been referring to Kennedy's election as the country's first Catholic president, although he provided no such correction or clarification.
Biden's disastrous interview aired the day after he met with around two dozen Democratic governors at the White House. According to the Times, when Gov. Josh Green of Hawaii, a doctor, asked the president about his well-being, Biden responded that his health was fine, "It's just my brain."
In addition to to reportedly joking about his mental faculties, Biden made clear he is staying in the race but needed to work less and to get more sleep.

On February 2, 2021, during his final broadcast, Rush Limbaugh praised Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), saying, “Have I mentioned lately how much I admire the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis? This guy has got what we call an iron-enforced spine.” Limbaugh humorously added that DeSantis was “the closest that we’ve ever had to a graduate of the EIB Limbaugh Institute.”
In Florida, we see the ultimate fulfillment of everything Rush and his followers have desired since the late 1980s. DeSantis’ recent achievements with Florida’s budget and economy are prime examples. Why can’t we have 25 red states run like this, and why isn’t DeSantis the new mandatory minimum standard?
In reality, DeSantis is turning his state into a haven for those seeking ordered liberty and prosperity.
After spending an additional $500 million of state surplus funds to pay down debt, Gov. DeSantis has now reduced 36% of Florida’s existing debt, while cutting numerous taxes and offering pay raises to teachers. “We now have the lowest per capita state debt of any state in these United States,” DeSantis announced at a press conference last month, after vetoing several pork projects from the legislature and trimming almost $1 billion from the annual budget.
DeSantis referred to a Tax Foundation analysis ranking Florida 50th in debt per capita, at just $973 per person. These numbers are from 2022, before he paid off much of this debt, suggesting that the current debt is likely much lower than the next best state.
What is so eerie about DeSantis paying off 36% of Florida’s debt is that over the exact same time frame, the federal government has accrued exactly 36% of its entire outstanding debt just since 2019. The Congressional Budget Office just raised its projection for the fiscal year 2024 annual budget deficits from $1.5 trillion to $1.9 trillion. That’s 6.7% of GDP, which is astounding given the high level of revenue the Treasury is taking in and the lack of an official recession.
Despite Florida’s $17 billion budget surplus for 2024-2025 and numerous tax holidays and toll relief provisions, DeSantis used his line-item veto to cut 450 appropriations worth $854.6 million from the budget initially passed by Republicans in the legislature. Many of these expenditures were from state bureaucracies.
Local media has savaged the governor for cutting state arts funding, but prioritizing police, national guard, and hurricane response is more important. Florida’s focus on taxes and spending has led to the best state economy in the country, with 21.9% GDP growth since 2019, nearly twice the national rate. DeSantis achieved the lowest debt per capita and the second-lowest tax burden in the country.
DeSantis didn’t just cut small-ticket woke priorities or the arts; he achieved significant savings on welfare programs. Casey DeSantis spearheaded Hope Florida, which combined state resources with local charities to help 30,000 people move off food stamps or cash welfare, saving the state hundreds of millions. Instead of handing out welfare checks without follow-up, Hope Florida retooled state welfare agencies to work with private charities in each county, steering people toward long-term private solutions.
DeSantis has saved money on Medicaid while deterring illegal immigration. He signed SB 1718, requiring Medicaid-accepting hospitals to ask patients about their legal status. Politico reports a 54% drop in Medicaid expenditures for Florida’s Emergency Medical Assistance program serving illegals, proving enforcement and deterrence work.
The governor’s policies have also shifted the state’s political culture to the right. Republicans now have an edge in voter registration of nearly 1 million, compared to a slight Democrat edge when DeSantis was elected.
During his first term, some accused DeSantis of focusing on cultural battles against woke policies. However, his legacy shows a greater focus on key economic and quality-of-life issues. Even school behavior and achievement have improved. According to Brevard Public Schools, scores increased with stricter behavioral standards from the Department of Education.
Thanks to the wild success of Florida’s school choice initiatives, public school enrollment in blue areas has plummeted. Private school enrollment has grown by 47,000, and homeschool enrollment has grown by nearly 50,000 since 2019. Over the same time frame, public schools in Broward, Duval, and Miami-Dade counties have enrolled 53,000 fewer students. There are now 49,000 empty classroom seats in Broward County, the state’s liberal bastion, leading to the closure of eight county schools over the next two years.
As longtime liberal Florida publisher Peter Schorsch put it, DeSantis is hell-bent on making the state inhospitable for leftists.
In reality, he is turning the state into a haven for those seeking ordered liberty and prosperity. Today’s leftists are willing to forgo quality of life for their pagan religious beliefs, which are becoming unwelcome in the state.
The only question is why Republicans and conservatives who listened to Rush Limbaugh for years won’t take yes for an answer. Aside from rejecting DeSantis in the presidential election, there is no effort to make his stewardship the minimum expectation in every other red state. Isn’t this mix of policy and electoral success exactly what we’ve been pining for our entire lives? Or perhaps, for some on the right, politics is just bread and circuses.
