Canadian Pro-Life News Bits, Jan. 17:


I’m Pete Baklinski, and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits – where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.

My colleague Josie Luetke has published a startling story about a Catholic school in Ontario affixing a “Pride” flag to a Crucifix in an elementary schoolroom.


Blasphemy is defined as an “action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things.” What happened at this school seems to fit that definition. This is a must-read story that highlights how LGBT activists have subverted Catholic education in Catholic schools while local shepherds have remained silent, watching it happen. 


In a similar vein, my boss and CLC president, Jeff Gunnarson, has published a piece exposing pro-homosexual children’s books at a Catholic school in Southern Ontario. He’s calling upon local parents to take action at the school board level. 


An interesting piece was published at The Hub in which the author critiques legacy media for slandering groups, such as Campaign Life Coalition—which the author mentions by name—as “the far-right.” Reading this was a breath of fresh air. It’s nice to see a reporter finally calling this out. 


Don’t miss the must-see video of the week in which Lila Rose, one of the world’s most visible pro-life voices, takes on a room full of 25 pro-abortion activists and debates them with absolute grace and eloquence on the life issue. It’s a long watch, but well worth it. 


Finally, don’t miss my reflection at the end about what the Federal Committee’s proposal to strip Christian and pro-life organizations of their charitable status really means. No one has yet spelled out how catastrophic this would be–until now.

The federal government recently received a committee proposal to strip churches and Christian organizations of their charitable status, targeting the very foundation of our faith communities.


This isn’t just some banal proposal–it’s a direct assault on religious freedom and the values that have built this nation, founded, as our Charter states, on principles that “recognize the supremacy of God.”

If this proposal is adopted, the impact will simply be catastrophic:

  • · Churches closed; assets seized by the CRA

  • · Food banks run by churches–gone.

  • · Shelters, addiction recovery programs, and youth ministries–shut down.

  • · The silencing of Christian voices in the public square.


This is more than an issue of taxation–it’s an attack on our Canadian way of life. If we don’t oppose this now, the consequences will be irreversible. 

How did this happen? 


Very quietly, some days before Christmas, a Finance Committee report was tabled in the House of Commons that called upon the Government of Canada to implement hundreds of recommendations in the upcoming 2025 federal budget. 

Alarmingly, two recommendations from the December 13 report included that the government strip religious organizations along with pro-life organizations of their charitable status.


Among the over 400 recommendations from the committee, two of them, 429 and 430, recommended respectively that the government “No longer provide charitable status to anti-abortion organizations,” and that it “Amend the Income Tax Act to provide a definition of a charity which would remove the privileged status of ‘advancement of religion’ as a charitable purpose.”


The BC Humanist Association, an organization that exists to advance the goals of atheists and agnostics and which claims that one “can be good without god,” took credit at the beginning of January for submitting the recommendations last July. It's not surprising to see an anti-God organization submit the recommendations. What is surprising, however, is that a government committee included such anti-Christian proposals in its report. 


The committee included members from all the major political parties who, apparently, supported these recommendations. While the Conservative Party had a dissenting opinion in the report, it did not mention or oppose these charitable status recommendations. 


Father Raymond J. de Souza was not using rhetoric in a December 29 piece in the National Post that the proposals, if adopted, would cause the “obliteration of the charitable sector” across Canada.


Over 40 percent of our country’s registered charities advance religion. If these 32,000 religious charities, including churches and religious-based groups which operate soup kitchens, shelters, refugee homes, and food banks, were to suddenly lose their charitable status, they would be forced, according to Canadian law, to pay a revocation tax, which is predetermined to be equal to 100 percent of the value of the organization’s remaining assets. 


The only way to avoid this tax is for the organization to transfer all remaining assets to another registered charity, none of which would be Christian-based, something that most Christian charities would rather avoid doing. 


To understand just how devastating this would be, it is key to understand that the revocation tax effectively captures the total value of the religious group’s buildings, properties, funds, and other assets (bank accounts, savings, investments, vehicles, equipment, furnishings, etc.), ensuring they cannot simply remain with the organization or be used for non-charitable purposes. 


For example, imagine a church with charitable status owns a building worth one million dollars, has one hundred thousand dollars in savings, and has furnishings and equipment valued at fifty thousand dollars. In this scenario, upon revocation of charitable status, the revocation tax would be 1,150,000 dollars, which the church would need to pay to the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) to maintain ownership of these assets. 


If the religious group or church cannot pay the revocation tax, the CRA has the power to seize and liquidate any and all assets to satisfy the tax debt. Given the likelihood that many, if not most, religious groups would be unable to pay such a tax, their properties, buildings, and assets would be seized by the government.


This proposal, if adopted, could easily become the historical equivalent of Thomas Cromwell seizing extensive tracts of land and wealth from English monasteries during the Reformation under the orders of Henry VIII as part of the King’s maniacal effort to obliterate the power and influence of the Catholic Church in his country. 


Historian George Bernard has called the dissolution of the monasteries in the late 1530s “one of the most revolutionary events in English history.” The King’s 1534 Act of Supremacy that allowed him to engage in these actions ushered in a persecution of the Church that resulted in the execution of hundreds who refused to comply, including, famously, Thomas More and John Fisher.


Christian groups in Canada are already raising a voice of alarm about the proposals. The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada has warned that the proposal, if adopted, “would have a far-reaching and devastating impact - on religious charities, the people they serve, and Canadian society,” adding that the measure would "destabilize the charitable sector in Canada.” The Christian Legal Fellowship is urging the government to “abandon” the proposal, stating that, if adopted, the “consequences would be devastating.”


All that could happen to our country's indispensable faith-based charities could also happen to pro-life charitable organizations if these measures are adopted. 

It is absolutely crucial that whoever will be leading the Federal government when the time comes to visit these proposals resolutely reject them for the good of our country and its citizens.

105 Years Ago: This Government Act gave birth to “Blind Pigs” and “Blind Tigers,” and the nation would never be the same:

The United States was still reeling from the losses of the Great War and from the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic as 1920 approached.

The mood in the country was changing, and the political arena with it.

But the country was about to see another significant change that would give birth to “Blind Pigs” and “Blind Tigers,” and the nation would never be the same!

 

Early Momentum

The origins of the anti-alcohol sentiment in America date back to the colonial era, but the voices of protest were seldom heard. 

It wasn’t until the 19th century that the movement began to gain traction.

 

The American Temperance Society was formed in February 1826 and was the first significant organized attempt to start a temperance movement. It started small but quickly gained momentum. Within 10 years, the organization had grown from a few local chapters to over 8,000 chapters and over 2.5 million members nationwide, who had taken the Society pledge to abstain from alcohol. 

 

The movement was fostered by nationwide reports of rampant alcohol abuse that were felt to be responsible for the surge of domestic violence, child abandonment, drunkenness in the workplace, and squandering.

The cause was embraced by numerous religious organizations and churches that viewed alcohol consumption as a moral sin that threatened countless families and the fate of the nation.

 

Throughout the 1800s, the movement continued to gain momentum. In the post-Civil War era, more and more Americans began flocking to the “Dry Movement.” The end of the war saw a substantial growth of bars and saloons, as the country tried to heal and begin its expansion west.

 

The Dry Movement gains momentum

Toward the end of the 19th century, another temperance group emerged and quickly gained traction among men. The Anti-Saloon League (ASL) took their protest to local and state governments.

 

Their tactics included strong lobbying campaigns. The ASL pushed out pamphlets, broadsides, and newspaper ads that touted the evils of alcohol and demanded the cessation of sales. They publicly derided politicians who did not support the movement and chose candidates to run against them who did. They were very successful in their efforts.

One of the Temperance League’s more aggressive members was a Kansas woman named Carrie Nation. She gained notoriety for openly protesting by entering bars and preaching and singing hymns to the patrons. 

 

She didn’t feel those simple actions were enough though, and her tactics quickly radicalized into throwing rocks through saloon windows and at bar patrons.

She was supported by her husband, David, who was also a fanatical supporter of the Dry Movement. 

After an incident in Wichita, her husband half-jokingly suggested she might try using a hatchet to effect maximum damage.

 

She was soon being arrested for brandishing a hatchet and destroying the bars and alcohol stores in several bars and saloons.

Arrested for her many attacks, Carrie was repeatedly bailed out by her husband, who was raising money for the movement by giving lectures on the evils of alcohol and even sold small stick pin miniature hatchets.

 

Most towns and counties were reluctant to prosecute her because of the growing strength of anti-alcohol sentiments sweeping the country.

The end of the 19th century saw an increasing number of states that already had statutes banning the sale of beer and spirits.

 

The Great War

The dawn of the 20th century afforded many new opportunities for the support of the growing prohibition movement.

When the U.S. entered into World War I, the movement saw it as an opportunity to further teach the evils of alcohol. Since most large breweries in the country were German owned and operated, their nationality was used against them by claiming that supporting the consumption of their products was treasonous.

 

The federal government used World War I as an opportunity to initiate laws that banned the manufacture of beers and liquors, citing that the crops were better needed to support the troops and the war effort against the “Huns.”

 

The precedent was set

With the end of World War I, the anti-alcohol organizations kept up the pressure on local and state politicians for a continued ban on beer and spirits.

There had been a shift in feelings at the federal level. It was felt that there were enough Congressmen and Senators in place to create federal law that would address the concerns on a national level.

 

Wayne Wheeler of the Anti-Saloon League wrote a draft bill titled the “Volstead Act.” It was named for Andrew Volstead, who was the chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee.

Volstead would champion the bill through the House and Senate.

 

The bill was pushed through and was initially vetoed by President Woodrow Wilson, who did not support the legislation. But his veto was overridden by a House vote of 68% in favor and 76% in the Senate and was quickly ratified by 46 of the 48 states on January 16, 1919.

 

Amendment XVIII

The 18th Amendment became an enforceable law on January 17, 1920.

The new amendment made the importation, sale, and transportation of alcohol illegal but did not address personal and medical consumption.

 

Wines and hard ciders could be made from fruit at home, but beer and spirits were completely banned.

In anticipation of the January 17 date, the country saw a run on alcohol purchases. Clubs and organizations began stockpiling while vendors embarked on marketing campaigns encouraging the public to “get theirs” before the ban on sales took effect.

 

There were several loopholes in the new law. One of the biggest was the ability for alcohol to be “prescribed” for medicinal purposes covering a variety of ailments.

It was estimated that within six months, over 57,000 licenses were issued to doctors and pharmacists to prescribe alcohol remedies.

 

The ban was welcomed by many, but there were many who were not happy with the new law.

It wasn’t long after Prohibition took effect that the country saw a rise in illegal activities relating to the smuggling and sale of illicit alcohol.

 

With Mexico and Canada having no ban, myriad incidents of alcohol being smuggled across the borders became rampant.


The country saw new words being introduced to their vocabulary. Words like “bootlegger” and “rum-runner,” became commonplace. Oddities, like the words “Speakeasies,” “Blind Pig,” and “Blind Tiger” gained common use for illegal establishments serving beer and spirits.  

 

It was a great opportunity for previously small mafia groups to grow and expand their organized crime efforts and maximize profits.

Organized crime factions began popping up in numerous American cities like Chicago and New York, led by men like Alphonse Capone and Lucky Luciano.


Them and others would start raking in millions of dollars by smuggling liquor across the borders of Canada or off the U.S. East Coast.

The demand for illegal liquor was high despite the majority of the nation seeming to adhere to the ban.

 

Illegal bars sprung up all across the country in the form of speakeasies, which were hidden bars where if you knew the password, you would be granted entry.

 

The “Roaring 20’s” was going to live up to its name  

By 1925, it was estimated that New York City alone had an estimated 70,000 speakeasies operating in full swing.

With the rise of illegal bars, there also came a rise in corruption. Police were paid off to look the other way. Judges were bribed to dismiss cases as they came to trial, and politicians were bribed to look the other way.

 

The competition to supply these establishments often became fierce among the numerous factions. Gang violence was commonplace, with shootouts taking place on the streets of many American cities as the various gangs sought control of their claimed territories.


Gangster Culture

The American public became enamored with this anti-establishment bravado. Hollywood took notice as well. It didn’t take long for gangster and mob movies to start showing up in theaters across the nation.

 

They introduced a new generation of movie stars like James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, Humphrey Bogart, and others to a thirsty nation. This was largely effective with the recent ability to add sound to movies. Audiences were captivated. 

But it was real-life incidents like the February 14, 1929, Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago that really started to draw the attention of the Feds.

 

The nation was becoming weary with Prohibition and the lawlessness that grew out of it.

Support began waning on the political front.


 

The Great Depression

In 1929, everything changed. The world economy crashed. Businesses shut, banks failed, industry ground to a halt, and the unemployment rate in the U.S. surged to 25%.

With so many out of work, the new income tax wasn’t able to bring in nearly enough to support the government.

The push to abandon the 18th Amendment grew. Farmers saw it as an opportunity for grain sales, and many politicians saw it as a revenue stream.

 

By 1933, the American public had had enough of prohibition and began demanding their representatives do something about it.

The XVIII Amendment was not really viewed as overly successful, although some historians suggest it did cause a drop in alcoholism across the nation. The facts that it had caused a tremendous rise in violent crime and corruption seemed to outweigh that, though.

 

Repeal

Congress quickly began working on what would become the 21st Amendment. The proposed Amendment passed and was ratified on December 5, 1933, after getting the favorable vote of 36 of 48 states.


To date, the 21st Amendment is the only Amendment enacted solely to repeal another.

Smith announced his resignation in a 24-word footnote included in filing opposing Donald Trump’s motion to stay the release of Smith’s report of his investigation of the January 6 and Mar-a-Lago documents hoaxes.

 

“The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and separated from the Department on January 10,” Smith’s resignation read.

Trump then added to another piece of the equation which was that Smith and his fellow Democrat prosecutors weaponized the law to terrorize his supporters for the “crime” of associating themselves with Trump.

 

Judge Cannon blocked the release of Smith’s report on the January 6 and Mar-a-Lago documents hoaxes because these reports contain references about Trump allies who were his co-defendants in the January 6 case or facing lawfare at the state level by Democrats for supporting Trump challenging the results of the 2020 election.

Smith tried to turn his report in before January 20 so fellow Biden crony Attorney Merrick Garland could try and sully Trump’s inauguration by making Smith’s report public before Trump takes office.

 

Now the report may never see the light of day as legal wrangling will take this matter past inauguration.

But this may not be the end of the road for Smith.

Journalist Mark Halperin predicted that Smith and his henchmen will likely face Congressional – and potentially criminal – investigations into coordination with the Justice Department and state level prosecutors Alvin Bragg and Fani Willis on the lawfare against Donald Trump.

 

“But the other piece of that equation is I have zero doubt that there was more coordination on lawfare that [than] has been reported. I have zero doubt of that, and I think it could be extensively more. And I think that we may see a congressional investigation about that,” Halperin stated.

 

 “We may see a Justice Department investigation. Maybe we’ll see someone in the media look into it, but I think that lawfare is not going to age well,” Halperin added.

J6 Pardons Coming!

TRUMP is likely to Pardon the J6 Defendants... Lawfare Casualties!

We cannot accept a repeat of what occurred four years ago," President Biden whined in the Washington Post on Monday, when Congress certified the results of the 2024 presidential election. Eternally present in whatever is left of the outgoing Democratic chief executive's mind, he castigated the protestors who breached the Capitol on January 6, 2021 as "violent insurrectionists"—even though none of the nearly 1,600 criminally charged defendants was charged with "insurrection" and about two-thirds of them were never accused, still less convicted, of any violent crime.

 

President Trump, who will return to office on January 20, and who was acquitted of "incitement to insurrection" in the Senate trial that followed his second impeachment in February 2021, has pledged to pardon "many" of the convicted protestors, whom he has described as "hostages." During and after the 2024 campaign, he noted that they faced harsh partisan justice in the legal system of the District of Columbia, where Biden won more than 92 percent of the 2020 presidential vote. More recently, Trump has stated that "the vast majority" of those convicted "should not be in jail," and promised that his administration would begin reviewing the convictions on a case-by-case basis within his first hour back in office.

 

Many January 6 defendants have protested inhumane prison conditions, including physical abuse, retaliation, and deprivation of food and heat, in a squalid D.C. jail from which several hundred were relocated after a U.S. Marshals Service investigation. Others have claimed they pleaded guilty under pressure to crimes they do not believe they committed in order to avoid jury trials for potentially more serious crimes in a hostile jurisdiction.

 

Still more have claimed that they were entrapped or otherwise denied due process, with many pointing to widely available video footage in which Capitol Police officers appeared to wave protestors into the building and a Justice Department inspector general's report that found that 26 FBI "confidential human sources," i.e. informants, were present among the crowds, including those inside the Capitol, on January 6.

 

In June 2024, moreover, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that obstruction of an official proceeding—one of the most common criminal charges leveled against January 6 defendants—can only be prosecuted on a much narrower basis than federal prosecutors had been using, and that many January 6 convictions may therefore be invalid.


By the numbers, about 1,000 of the January 6 defendants have been charged with infractions that hardly rate among crimes that normally incur tough sentences in any circumstances. Kevin Seefried, a Delaware drywall installer who entered the Capitol with a Confederate flag and pointed it at a U.S. Capitol Police officer, was sentenced to three years in prison on the now dubious charge of obstruction of an official proceeding, along with such misdemeanors as trespassing and disorderly conduct.


His 21-year-old son Hunter, who swept broken glass away from a shattered window to help other protestors enter the building, got two years for obstruction. Father and son had no known prior convictions, expressed contrition in court, and sincerely apologized for their actions. But they drew no leniency other than being spared much longer sentences initially sought by D.C. federal prosecutors—to say nothing of the leniency recently granted by Biden to another Hunter, who, thanks to his fortuitous parentage, will serve no jail time despite a federal criminal conviction in one case and guilty plea in another matter.

 

Little leniency also came to Richard Barnett, a retired Arkansas firefighter who got 4 and a half years for putting his feet up on then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's desk after photojournalists asked him, according to his court testimony, to "act natural." Barnett was not accused of any act of violence, but prosecutors did allege that he stole one of Pelosi's office envelopes and wrote her a rude note. His actions, according to the court, also constituted obstruction of an official proceeding as well as "civil disorder."

 

Jenna Ryan, a Texas realtor, spent 60 days in the slammer for "parading, demonstrating or picketing in the Capitol." In the court's learned opinion, she committed this misdemeanor by spending two minutes and eight seconds inside the building without causing any apparent harm.

Compare their fates to the 60 percent of accused Manhattan felons whose charges were reduced to misdemeanors by district attorney Alvin Bragg's office in 2023 in the name of "restorative justice."

Recall further that during those "mostly peaceful" Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, leftist prosecutors routinely and to widespread media approbation announced that they would not prosecute non-violent offenders.

 

Indeed, in our two-tiered system of politicized criminal justice, they even failed to prosecute many violent offenders. The crucial difference, of course, is that BLM protestors, including violent ones, are favored by the progressive Left legal establishment and Biden's heavily biased Justice Department, while Trump supporters, even when non-violent, are not.

 

President Trump is right to review each January 6 case carefully, but those who were punished in violation of due process or with undue harshness deserve full and immediate pardons.

Remember that illegal alien who was most likely responsible for starting the Kenneth fire with a blowtorch?

Last week, we joked that this "homeless" man caught red-handed with a blowtorch near the start of the Kenneth fire in Woodland Hills wasn't homeless, as reports had suggested, but his home was actually 2,000 miles to the south, in Mexico.


This is believed to be the man who is suspected of starting fires in the Woodland Hills area in Los Angeles, according to local radio station KFI. The Kenneth Fire "emerged" on Thursday afternoon in the Woodland Hills area, prompting evacuations. The fire has swelled to nearly 1000 acres.

 

The Woodland Hills residents who arrested this man claim he was starting debris on fire in the area, but that, and the fact that he was carrying a blowtorch, just isn't enough for LAPD to pin him for arson.

Detectives are still investigating it as possible arson, but LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi said Friday that there was not immediately enough evidence for that charge.

 

The illegal immigrant is being held on a felony probation violation, though we are unaware of this separate conviction.

Of course, ICE is putting out a detainer request on the guy, but with California's sanctuary state law, we can expect this guy to remain in the country illegally.

  • ·        The California fire maps start in 2016. I encourage you to take a look at the maps as there is a pattern.  It’s Agenda 2030 they are working towards.  But these are not normal fires.  https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2016

  • ·        The first DEW attack that I know of started the Sonoma California Fire, then Paradise California Fire. Also Spokane Washington was hit by a DEW and burnt down homes. Lahaina was way later.

  • ·        If you look at the maps of fires it is astronomical.  Yes some are arson fires started by Deep State. The Deep State is trying to seize the land for it’s resources. California has gold and a lot of resources. 

  • ·        You can find drone footage of Paradise where metal wheels on cars melted across driveways. (Pictures of melted tires are also found in Paradise, Lahaina and LA fires) That’s not a forest fire. By them chemtrailing us heavily that adds aluminum oxide which causes fires to burn hotter. 

  • ·        Oh and they have purposely been diverting water as you know. California has plenty of water. Last year’s snow pack in Sierra’s was record breaking.  Snow was 8 to 10 feet deep.

  • ·        We moved to Cali in 1997 and there were few fires. Over the last ten years they have gone off the charts. 

  • ·        This Newsom is a Deep Fake. I do believe they sold us out to the Chinese. 

  • ·        I believe Australia had DEW attacks also. DEWS are on ships, planes, in ground. 

  • ·        Also Lawrence Livermoore Labs in California made the world’s largest laser.  Why?  You can google that and find pics of it. Scary as this tech was made to protect the people but they are using it against the people.
